Can anyone tell me when the front box with the pvc cover held by shock cord was first offered by Dandy/Riva.

Our Designer was made in 2006 and has the described box. Not perhaps as secure as the hard top boxes (which were never that secure.) but they do hold a lot and the canvas lid allows for more 'flexible' packing.

Yes I thought it would be about then, this is something I made in 2004 see time stamp on photo.

I found it quite easy to make although I must point out that I am a joiner (time served). It was made from plywood laminated with plastic.

I read your piece wrong the first time. I was thinking "Plastic. Surely he means fibreglass" There are lots of constructions made from ply coated in GRP or used to aid corner strength. I'd guess that's not classical joinery!
I then looked at the photo again and saw No it's plywood with a plastic laminate side. Just at the point where I realised what the product was a light switched on in my head.
A long time ago there was a conversation about what the ply was on the original Dandys. Had a brief look for a link but the conversation was so long ago it might not even of occurred on the Dandycampers site. Anyway Phoenix, Cazz and myself concurred that it was a phenolic coated ply also known as "Riga Form"? First you might give any views or knowledge on that, one thing being we found supply especially in 4mm a bit limited.
The oldest Dandies do at least have a beauty and are loved to the point where some will perform renovation. The second age of Dandys the plastic sided ones are not exactly loved. In the modern fashion of conjoining two words to make one I think they would generally be described as "Fugley". The sides a depressing version of battleship grey, warped and bulged producing a most unsatisfactory appearance. I think rescues may have been made or at least considered with aluminium sheet. Though I think some confidence with thin alloy sheet and subsequent spraying might limit the number who may attempt that. Another option would be re siding as per the earlier Dandys with phenolic ply but that would be making the Dandy something it was not and while not knowing the cost of plastic faced ply the phenolic ply wasn't exactly cheap.
Could plastic faced ply provide a brighter resilient replacement side option? I'd seen coloured phenolic ply and never thought about the option as it tended to be in more dramatic colours see: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I realise that there are a limited number of renovations on Dandys so I'm not asking for you to waste your time on investigation or a weighty tome. Just that if someone who is time rich and money poor is given the gem of an idea for residing a Dandy in a contemporary and affordable fashion it might save one or two of the least loved Dandys?
As for your front box (o'er missus) now I see why you were interested in the date. It's nice to have had the original idea. I can see why Ian would go to self folded boxes for low number production as against bought in fiberglass boxes. (Not quite logic if he was then buying in big fibreglass boxes for the Destinys and Dimensions)
Did you store the Dandy that had this box indoors or just stuff something into the box to stop a pool forming if storing outside?
I see Ian has the boxes for sale at a not unreasonable £140. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The first prototype has an exterior grade 6mm ply bonded to a 1mm plastic sheet. The plastic was sourced locally in Gateshead. From what I remember it cost then about £20 to build. and aply piece was just put over the top before the elasticated cover was put on.
Proto 2 was built with a proper laminated top with elasticated cover as a failsafe.
Both took gas bottle and leisure battery plus hookup leads and various other bits.

I think you misunderstood my quote of price this is what it cost in 2004 when I actually built them, as for now I have not given it any thought really.

How hard was it to build? Easy enough for me to have a go?

Yes I would say anyone with reasonable skill at diy or even modelling could build one as all the materials are easily available from most Diy stores. I could produce a drawing if enough people are interested with build instructions.

Ah you bought the plastic sheet separately it wasn't a pre bonded product?
Any links to the plastic sheet?
Just bonded with thixotropic adhesive or similar?
Could be a cracking idea in conjunction with ply to provide replacement sides.
Look a lot more functional than fibreglass boxes especially if larger gas bottle friendly.

We would be interested in the drawing for ideas as we plan to build one for Phoenix our 4 berth and one for Dylan our 6 berth some time in the near future.
We are kicking around a few ideas of our own at the moment.
With Phoenix we will have to negotiate the storm bar when erected so we may have to have 2 separate lids.
With Dylan when erected access from the top will be difficult so we are wondering about putting in a side access door.

I f you have a six do consider a modification I did when we had one, I put a trap door in the bottom of the bed, if you did this with the PVC cover you will have little trouble. Our six front box carried two gas bottles and a change over (manual).

Toe Itch I will try to get a link for you, although I am not certain the will supply over the internet. I did use a thicksotropic glue a German one I believe called Bison fix which I use for some of my modelling activities.
As for sizes you can do whichever suits your equipment, I will try to get some drawings complete by next week, although I am still modifying our Designer for water and on board leisure battery and charger with ZIG unit.

I could other than doing drawings take the people who would like to build one through it step by step, by building one for our Designer and taking and posting photographs links to parts etc as I go .
What do you prefer.

I like pics, so does Caz numbers. If you are building one anyway, then the pics of the progress will be fab to follow, although we don't need to build one, I'm very interested in following other peoples projects.

That is a good idea, we hadn't thought of that. Now you have got us thinking again.
Step by step pics would be good then everyone can see how to do it.
