You can get solar panels that are like a briefcase that open up but I think they may be a bit pricey Smile Then again if your going to use it often it may be worth while.

This is a cheap one of different design

    Oh bugger.
Held out from saying anything because I really know very little about solar power. I was hoping for a Jake or Vicky comment who will both know far more. I don't even know my Amorphous from my Crystalline.
The four things I do know: 1) The light ad didn't state the LED's power consumption. 2) How do they recommend you power these LED's? LED's used to be really sensitive and needed specialist transformers from mains are these OK to battery drive? 3) Solar panels produce on average half their rated power per hour of sunlight 5) Your not going to want to power these lights during the day while the solar cells are working so some form of battery will be needed.
Beyond this I can't remember your preferred stance on EHU's whether you have a 12V battery fitted at present and if you tend to drive around a bit whilst away. All would affect what your looking at.
I started off feeling guilty that I waited for someone to offer better advice than I can, I'm now feeling guilty as I'm part way into a piece on batteries and charging and I'd not even thought about solar or wind charging.
Think 7w is more for keeping batteries charged.
    Sorry.

If you're not using an EHU but tend go out and about in your car during the day the cheapest and easiest way to charge your battery is to install a split charger see [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Sorry these people only have one website address so select Electrical Accessories, Towing Electrics, Self-Switching Combi Master. If your out for over an hours drive it could have the battery fully charged. Bit of a pain in the rear to keep moving the battery though. Also if you get a 3 way fridge that takes more amperage than a coolbox this can be used to power that on your drive to your site. Not the end of the world to wire in either.
If you ever got anything flash with an internal fridge it will power that, it would charge the battery in situ while towing but as well as needing a 12S plug the high amp connections to a trailer (fridge and battery) are most likely to have earthing problems.
See how the briefcase unit goes first.

I'm going to regret asking this but how many different batteries have you got in each or either of your Dandys?

Wink that's telling Embarassed ok behave one heavy duty car battery and a Halfords power-pack the brief case comes with crocodile clips and a cigarette lighter plug which would charge either I must admit I don't quiet under stand electrics which I will have to get my head around I have read your other post regarding amp, watts and volts and will keep reading it until it sinks in because I am refitting Daisy(5) to accommodate my sons needs and what electrical goods I can fit her with and have her run off the EHU not got a fridge I borrowed one for the Tour but fancy getting the one that will run off gas as well thanks for the site ordering the thing you have suggested as all helps water proof LED lights 115684958 water proof LED lights 115684958

Yes just as I was typing the question about your batteries I was wondering how it would read.

No, don't buy anything else just yet.

A while back Cazz (no numbers) looked at the relative cost each day for her running a gas fridge and possibly a bit of heating. For her and Wayne it was a no brainer. She had relatively modest power demands and the gas use was a fraction of the cost of an EHU.
One of the themes of my part constructed tome on leisure batteries and charging is that I think leisure batteries will become less relevant. We needed them when lighting was with incandescent bulbs or even the camping fluorescents so many of us have but the power demands of LEDs is so much less. If all we want is a basic light then a simple rechargeable device or a similar light taking rechargeable or conventional batteries will provide light for a fortnights camp on one lot of batteries or it's initial charge.
Then again if instead of a Dandy you had this years model of Pennine or something similar where the inside looks more like a posh boudoir than a tent you would want all the factory fitted lights to work so you may well want a leisure battery.
Your lad: How many power hungry electronic devices does he need / want? If it's the latest PS 27 with a 60" plasma screen permanently linked on line (You may note I know bugger all about entertainment technology) then EHU is the only way. I was camping in Dent and there is no signal for my phone so it discharges really quickly looking for one. My phone also acts as my alarm clock. Great thought I, I'll get a battery radio alarm. When at the shop I thought why not DAB only to find that the power demand is such that batteries of the internal kind are pointless. Look at your intended devices closely.
Where you want to go, how often you want to go? If you have moderate power demands that could be covered by a battery but you tend to camp in developed areas and you only camp 3 to 5 weekends a year EHU might still be the way to go. If you want to go to places without EHU then it's a battery. If camping 8 weeks a year then the £280 pounds saved by not using EHU may make the spend of £200 to £400 on a massive solar panel economic.

It's what you need to power, where you want to go and how long your going for that drive the decision.

One decision affects another. I have a 3 way fridge freezer it's great if I want to go off EHU or if there's a group and we want ice on tap or to keep frozen foods but it's bloody big and cumbersome. Hence 70% of the time the coolbox is used first. Happily spent £45 on the EHU at Goodwood last year as we had 6 coolboxes running all the time so only spent £10 per day on all our food and drink consumption as against the small fortune if we had eaten out.

The none of the above factor. I have two Tilley lamps and a petrol lantern. Are they easy to transport. No. Does the fuel smell and take up space. Yes. Do the lights smell while running. Yes. Are they easy to light. No especially the Tilleys. Why do I use them then? I like the slightly yellowy light, I like the smell, I like the faint hissing sound. It brings a wonderfully comforting environment to a dark evening if alone reading a book in or before bed. Oh it is useful as it was all I needed to heat the Green Un last November when even on min my heater was too warm. So in the last instance desire overrules all of the above.

Now you can go spend once you have worked out what you need it to do.

I got there Mr Itch, and I actually follow. Shocked

Basically in the summer we take a gas bottle for the fridge and hob, and a fully charged leisure battery for charging phones, some small basic LED lights, some times we use the TV - but often we don't. We have used the battery for two weeks on very low daily use before we had to charge it. The camper has a built in gas heater.

We did have a small solar panel to keep it topped up when we weren't camping, but for keeping it charged up when it's being used will need a good size quality panel, but this of course costs more. The saying comes to mind - you get what you pay for comes to mind.

Last year we bought an idiot proof easy to use [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for the camper, so the leisure battery gets charged whilst you're driving. Although this wasn't cheap, it's really easy to fit yourself, in the van we can run 12 volt electrics from a fused box on it, as they make then in house - I imagine they would make one with just the split charge in it if needed. It can also be moved between vehicles without incurring extra costs.

In the winter however, we do use electric for the convector heater in the Dandy, the Dandy gives us more room to spread out, and I find the gas heater noisy if it's on for too long over night. affraid

So basically I agree with Mr Itch:-
    1) Work out what appliances you need to use.
    2) How long are you going for?
    3) Is it going to be cold?
    4) Do you need the fridge or will a coolbox and ice blocks do, can you freeze the blocks on site?

I hope this makes sense and is of help to you or anyone for that matter.

water proof LED lights 115684958 water proof LED lights 115684958 water proof LED lights 115684958 both very helpful to answer questions
once the refit complete hope to camp at least twice a week for short ones 2-3 days then as my son and dogs hopefully get used to it I will then be away for longer ...( yep build up for next years Tour water proof LED lights 3462454224 )
as for electrics a camping TV plus DVD combi not worked out the size yet but not to big as going to be built in somehow yet to be worked out then maybe the satellite dish ( camping one) ,led lights, and if I can a laptop but recharging is the problem on that one ... fridge not important for now but will get the 3 way on for the longer journey ...
the rest would be on gas ..no underfloor heating but got gas heater
Initially camping will be local and off ehu for wild camping I call it anywhere suits and legal.. the laptop calms the meltdowns but hoping the more used to it he gets with the dogs the better he will get ... the tour camping experience opened my eye's a bit to his change of needs and who we camp with so with all needs met the better experience he has although he is not a novice to camping but as he has hit teens now the world changes water proof LED lights 3462454224 water proof LED lights 3462454224 never anything to eat water proof LED lights 3462454224 and not easily impressed
if all fails I will go away on my own and leave him at home with a childminder water proof LED lights 344726530 then books lantern and radio for me water proof LED lights 3462454224 water proof LED lights 3462454224 so I will gather all my electrics that I would like to have in Daisy and before fitting in I will check with you the powering of it all so then I will know weather its feasible water proof LED lights 115684958 Tow Itch and Cazz
