    Hello Dandy community,

I'm Hannes from Austria - please excuse, if my English is not really good ;-). I live in the Tyrol, be married and have 3 children. For a long time we spent our holidays in regular tents. But we were looking for more "luxury". Because we have a limited storage space in our vehicel hall we searched for a solution. A caravan would be too large, trailer tents "wastes too much time" for erecting and pulling down... Then we found "FOLDING CAMPERS"!

BUT folding campers are hardly unknown here in Austria. In Germany as well. Due of this I have imported a Raclet Super Quick Stop from England one year ago. But it is not a top-of- the-range folding camper. But it doesn't matter. It was a bargain and I used this purchase to see if it works to import and register such a camper here in Austria. But it was easier then I thought.
During the last year we have used the camper very often. But unfortunally the sun doesn't shine every day. So we were forced to pull down the camper (with the cotton canvas) sometimes when he was wet. I don't have to loose more words about such a situation. No

We still love the handling/system of a folding camper. But now we think about buying a more "weather independent" solution... and we found the RIVA DANDY Campers.
The model DESTINY would be our favourite. But unfortunally it it very hard to get more information about this camper. No brochure, only less pictures from inside, no video on youtube, no price information...
So I had the idea to activate an account in your forum. Now I hope to get the information which I'm looking for ;-)

    Now my most important questions:

    - Why Dandy Campers are so rare at ebay, preloved, etc. in contrast to pennine, conway,...?
    - Does anyone of you know a link to a video in which I can watch the erction and/or pulling down of the DESTINY?
    - The DIMENSION offers "Power assisted beds and side walls". What does this mean?
    - What will be the price for a new Riva Dandy DESTINY?

Thank you in advance for your support.

    Best regards

    Hello Hannes

I'll try to answer as best I can.

    1) I don't know the numbers made during peak manufacture but I gather it was always a much lower scale operation than Conway or Pennine. The plant was a smaller set up.

    2) No not in real time. As Riva made a video for the Dart that covered all smaller Dandys I wonder if they made one for the large side entry ones. Though they look different the method is still the same though. Have you seen the film for the smaller ones?

If Riva did produce a film Ian the proprietor of Riva Leisure may have a copy. If you try to contact him he is not very good at replying to email.

    3) The power assist on the Dimension and the Destiny is a series of gas struts. Two on each wall to lift the walls then a pair at each end to help lift the beds. You will see the end ones on the outside on this [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Though on a much older Dandy the ones on the wall are like these [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

    4) There isn't a buy it new price the last ones were made in 2008. The existing company Riva Dandy Sales concentrates on second hand sales, servicing and parts.
Some of the components of the post 2000 Dandys are generally thought to be of a lower standard than the earlier ones. That does not mean that they were of a lower quality than other folding campers. There are Dandys on the road over 40 years old. I have a modern Designer (that is Modern as in 1991) I also have one from the early seventies. Even the latest ones should have a life of over 40 years. All the components are simple enough to be repaired, re made or they are bought in components like the suspension which is still available.

If you look through the Riva website it will give you a good idea about the later models. Unfortunately at the moment his stock for sale is limited. If you would have looked earlier this year you would have seen 2 or 3 Destinys a Dimension and a couple of Designers at any time.

The dark blue Dandies are all doubled skinned with an insulating material between the layers. Though the standard single skinned dandy is warmer than canvas these double skinned ones are extremely warm and combined with a heater allow full 12 month camping. I camped in Dec 2011 and Jan 2012. This is from Vicky and Nick campng.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

There are lots of things I could say but one of the best resources of file material on Dandys is at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] you need to set up a Yahoo email account to use but that is free.

Dandys are not just a British thing quite a number were exported to The Netherlands an old one of these was bought by a German gentleman [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Anything we can help you with please ask.

... all for your warm welcome. And especially thanks to "Tow Itch" for the quick and detailed information.

But unfortunaly the information contains the bad news that the Dandys are not being built any more Sad
In this case I have to think about a new solution. It is unpossible for me to go to the Riva company within some days in that moment when they offer a used one. And buying such a Camper without checking out such an item in real is to much risk for me...

The only possibility remains that way, that someone of you is travelling to Italy and sell the camper to me when you are on the return journey through Tyrol. Hello from Austria ! Questions to Dandy campers. Especially DESTINY 1710857839

Obviously you would want to look.
To be fair to Ian I think he offers the second hand vehicles in an excellent condition. I don't know of anyone one who has had complaints about Riva's second hand sales.
Some would say this is reflected in the prices he charges.
You are in a unique position though. You can't view in a couple of days time. Though in the age of budget airfairs this is more possible than it once was.
Even if new ones were available your not able to pop back for servicing or repairs.
In a way as there are so few components on a camper I'd say that your better off with a secondhand one than new. Why?
Most/All new units have faults as popping back from Austria for a fix wouldn't be possible I would say a used and serviced Dandy would be liable to be less likely to have faults.
Most of the newer Dandys at Riva don't turn round in days, more like several weeks. If you wait to a point where there are 2 or 3 Destinys on site then I'd say it would be worth a budget flight. Either when you see them in the flesh you had got it all wrong and they are not for you (the same risk if new) or one would be sure to please.
The major option with the newest ones is the difference between ones with the original PVC awning and the later optional Acrylic awning. The original ones are heavy but very sturdy. The later ones had more space were lighter but needed drying out to pack but being Acrylic were quick to dry out. Secondhand means that while you can know the differences you don't get to choose the option, you only get what is available.

What can you legally tow in Austria? What is the maximum you want to tow? There are some American american wind up roof or pop top campers that have PVC for the fabric sides these tend to be a bit heavy for UK use and are for specialists as the braking is not UK standard. Here is a second hand one on eBay they are still in production. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The best of luck with whatever you choose to go with.

Dandy's stand the test of time and you wouldn't be disappointed with an older one, if you do go to Riva I'm sure you will find a Destiny that you'll be very happy with and in tip top shape. Below is a video of my dandy ...... it is 21 year old.

@caz1960: Sorry, but my English skills are not so well that I understand messages "between the lines" Embarassed
I understand that you think about travelling to Italy next June. Do I understand correctly that you own more than one Dandy? And you would sell one of this??? Or is this the the famous British humour Very Happy

Also you asked how new the Destiny should be. This is easy to answer: It not depends of its age - it depends of its condition. And it should be complete with awing. I plan an investment for the next 15 - 20 years. My wife and me take care of our things very carefully. So we are willingly to pay a corresponding price if it's worth in our opinion.
And time shouldn't be a reason. Now we have our Raclet Camper and we are satisfied with it. But "Good is good, but better carries it" Exclamation

But there is another topic I think about:
For us it is Italy not far away. Often there are REALLY HOT temperatures when we are there. So I'm a little bit worried about the PVC canvas. Now we have a canvas which is made full out of cotton - and it's a fantastic atmosphere. No consideration!
What happens in a Dandy when it is very hot outside respective the sun is shining with all its power? Isn't it like sleeping in a plastic bag? Sweating included?
Is it possible taking out the windows completely? I haven't found some pictures with opened windows.
Please let me know how it is standing with a Dandy in the sun. A honest answer is requested! Laughing

@Tow itch: Thanks for the link to the American camper. The authorities in Austria are very strict concerning to gas(pipes), chassis and brakes. To import an American is a nightmare. You have to change the whole chassis and gas installation.
Once I guess that I saw an AL-KO tow hitch on one picture in the internet. Is it correct that all the Dandy have an AL-KO chassis?

When I bought our Raclet I realised that in the UK campers under 750kg have no papers. So I was a little bit worried before the registration... But I had a obliging offical.
The DESTINY weights a little bit more than 750kg. Does it have papers? If it would be possible that maybe one of you send me a pdf-file with all technical data. Then I would visit the "obliging offical" for asking if there are any reasons that the Dandy would not be registered in Austria.

    Thank you

    Hannes

    hi hannes

with regard to dandying in hot weather it's okay as the dandy is cool in hot weather and cosy in cold weather

you may get some condensation in the awning (if you are lucky enough to find a destiny with a dandy awning) in the cold weather but that can be solved easily by sewing two sheets together and putting them behind the awning roof poles (it also looks pretty if you hang it right) i'm sure there is a pic somewhere on the forum

i realise that you don't know anyone on the forum but if you see a dandy you quite like and it's close to where one of us lives (check out the members map) i'm sure someone would be happy to go and inspect and look to see if its worth buying - our members are very honest and would let you know if they think it's dodgy

you could also let us know how good your DIY skills are as that gives us an idea if you are looking for a slight 'fixer upper' or something is very good condition with no mends needed

good luck in your search Hannes

    Hello Hannes

Though caravans have documents that tie up with markings for anti theft purposes, here in the UK trailers and caravans under 3,500Kg (and possibly some larger) do not have registration documents like cars motorcycles or indeed commercial trailers.
I may be best that you speak to Ian at Riva at some point. I mentioned that Dandys were exported to The Netherlands in some numbers they were obviously exported to other countries in smaller numbers as well. Look at the next to last picture this one was originally intended for export to Australia. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

You asked was the chassis AL-KO. No the coupling mechanism is AL-KO like one of these [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] The chassis was made by Riva/Dandy with parts running up into the body. In effect the whole body is a space frame box with just a cut out for the door. If you search the files in the yahoo group one of the 90's advertising brochures shows a picture of the frame.
For your information the suspension is by Indespension [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Brakes are by Knott.

So you have a 1,00Kg trailer without any state defined paperwork. As the original manufacturer Riva are ideally placed to provide any information required by the Austrian authorities.

With regard to the sweating and condensation concerns. It just doesn't work like that. Right from the very first Dandy the roof was always insulated. This cut down heat absorption from the largest source. The insulated walls are just the icing on the cake. (hope the phrase translates) If you are in a hot climate sure the inside gets hot. There is no magic air con unit but if you have ever put a tent or trailer tent up without an inner tent the Dandy is nowhere near as desperately hot as they become and I would say it is as cool or cooler than a canvas tent with an inner tent. Again the awning is unlined so will be hotter. If you get the PVC awning not the Acrylic one I'd recommend putting additional zips in. See: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

yes I do have more than one but at this moment will not be selling them the answer was that I would be willing to tow one over for you as I am going to see the Giro cycling race ..
now I know that you are not bothered that its one of the older ones

Thanks again for all your replys Exclamation

Now my wife and me are ABSOLUTELY sure that a Dandy Destiny will be the perfect choice for us. And we regret that the Dandys weren't deemed worthy of any look by us when we searched for a folding camper in England last year Sad
However - like I wrote - it was an experiment how it works to import such an item.

But now I have two last (Laughing) questions:
    1) My size is 194 cm (76 inches). So I should fit into one bed exactly?! Or can I expect 1 or 2 inches more between my top hair afro and the wall?
    2) The trailer coupling (50mm/ 1,9685 inches) and the electric connection (7-pin trailer socket) of the RACLET I bought in England fits perfect. But it is a French product. Concerning to this my question: Do have ALL the Dandys and (other trailers) in GB the same sizes? For 99 percent I guess that it must be. It's only to make sure.
The electric inside (wall sockets, etc.) I have to change to our system.

@Eilis: My DIY skills are not the worst. But I would prefer a Destiny in very good condition. Not because of having "two left hands" but of having less time because of my job activity.
Concerning to this, it's unbelievable that this camper (ebay-link from Tow Itch) were sold for £1,395 - with only one bid!
It looks like it's in a very good condition. Unfortunally it wasn't a DESTINY.

From now onwards we are searching to find our favourite.

    Best regards

    Hannes

Hight. Read through this thread and you will see the possibilities. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Depening on the age of your children a possible 7'8" by 6'3" bed.

With regard to the Ball and connections: Yes 50mm is euro standard. As for electric as the Destiny and Dimension have a fridge and carry a leisure battery they need more than the 7 pin connector you are used to. That connector is called a 12N connector. The UK way of doing things was to supplement this with a second 7 pin connection the 12S connector. Whether the last destinys used these or the more modern euro 13 pin connector I'm unsure but spares are available for all as are 13 pin to 12N and S jumpleads and 12N and S to 13 pin.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Don't know if your more interested in the Destiny (with the loo) or the slightly sorter Dimension (without) but for more images try Google Images and Dandy Destiny, Riva Destiny, Dandy Riva Destiny etc. Oh sorry the Riva destiny search has to be Riva Destiny Folding Camper or you get loads of religious stuff.

    Hi Hannes.
If you want to add me to facebook you can see my pics of a 2006 model of the Destiny with the toilet. I can post you more pics if you give me your email address too. If you search for me by name: Kriston Zissler. I'm sure there will only be one lol.

In regards to Ian at Riva. I have already asked if there is a video of a Destiny being erected, but he told me there isn't one, and it would cost too much to make one. I don't relly know why it would cost anything to be honest, but there aren't any plans to make one anyway.

Hope you find what your looking for.

2(!) days ago a video concerning the erection of a Dandy destiny was published by another Dandy-Forum on youtube ("Dandy Destiny Folding Trailer Tent - How to put up")

And my pleasent anticipation got a little cloudy after that what I've seen. I have hoped to shorten the put up time with the Destiny in comparison to my Raclet.
Mhhhhhhhhh.... But after I have seen this video, I'm not sure, if this would be the case. There are a lot more of grips and time. Due the fact that we often go camping for only 3-4 days EVERY MINUTE Very Happy counts!

Now my wife and me are a little bit disappointed to see that it isn't the simple system like we have expected. Objectively I have to say that putting up the Raclet is around something simple.
Now I think to copy the Dandy system for fixing the PVC-roof scratch ...

Our Designer isn't as big as the Destiny but has plenty of space with the awning and ....... we just flip over each of the beds, pull up the front open the door and push up the back add 3 roof poles and put the kettle on ...... 10 minutes. People watch on sites and are amazed at how fast we are set up and we often go for just two nights .......... that's why we bought a Dandy over any other camper or trailer tent. Very Happy

I'll do a video over the next couple of weeks to show how easy it can be Hello from Austria ! Questions to Dandy campers. Especially DESTINY 184121345

    Hi Hannes

First off - welcome to the site.

Secondly, this whole discussion is fascinating: My wife and I bought our first Dandy Destiny (a 1991 high sided Destiny) and our thinking was also around the height issue. I'm 6 feet 4 inches (1.93M in metric). I also sleep flat and straight on my front so you can add in the additional length of my feet too. Having been away just last week I can confirm that my head touches the PVC at one end of the bed and my feet at the other but I can stretch fully cheers

The height is terrific inside and I don't spend all day hunched over like Quasimodo.

As for putting the thing up. Wife and I are now well practised in erecting the Destiny. It really does take about 10 minutes as others have suggested. Same to break it down once all the pre-packing bits and bobs are stashed away.

Word of caution : on the height debate it was suggested you could turn the bed 90 degrees for extra length. In theory - yes. In Practice - not so much.
For a low sided Destiny this probably works. For a high sided (like the one that you are looking for) the drop from the beds to the seating/bed is about 30-40 centimeters so a solution would need to be sourced to make that work. However, as you've mentioned your 4 ladies (I guess wife and 3 daughters), then those beds would be pressed into service anyway.

Lastly - toilet. This was never a consideration for us as 1) we were looking for an older model and 2) my wife hates the ammount of space lost to an indoor toilet. However, have you considered the possibility of a seperate toilet tent to be housed within the awning?

Perhaps a whole load of us could have a Dandy meet in the Tyrol? Winter 2012 anyone? We could prove how good they can be in the snow... Razz

    Cheers

We have the high sided, 2006 destiny, and the bed is exactly the same height as the seating. We use all 3 beds every time were away as we have 4 nippers. We use the seating/beds so we can sleep next to the babys in the sofa/bed.
