    Winter covers Empty Winter covers

Post by mike Thu 18 Aug 2011, 10:45 am

Mick from under cover posted this and suggested it got its own thread so here it is,any questions or thoughts about winter covers can go in here.

    Thanks for the welcome everybody,

I hope you are all enjoying your summer, I am currently looking at a new range of high quality UV resistant breathable material for use with winter covers, a few people have told me that the covers they have bought from various places have only lasted a season or two, I would be interested to hear your thoughts, the new material I am looking at may be a little more expensive but long lasting. I wonder if it would be worth opening a new topic on this,

    thanks again

    Mick

Hi Mick, that interesting news about possible winter storage covers. It's so difficult to find covers suitable at a sensible price. If you have a Conway or Trigano then these are readily available off the shelf but for Dandy's they are custom.I found a local company who make breathable boat covers who where going to make me one from breathable acrylic for significantly less money than Specialised or Pro-Tec but in the end by chance i found someone with a Dandy who lived a few miles away who had a specialised cover for sale so it was a great result. The guy also had one of your replacement transit covers on his dandy,it looked like a great product and also seemed to have slightly deeper sides than the original cover.Specialised charge the same price to make a cover for dandy designer as for a 4 berth caravan, also their quote to me did not add up the net price and total price was wrong as the vat was over 30% they told me this included the delivery although this is not listed on the quote and on their website it clearly states all custom covers are free delivery in UK,i questioned this and got no response.

    Hi Mike,

I have seen some 'one size fits all' winter covers for Conways, Pennines ETC. which I am very dubious about as some of the models that they are supposed to fit, vary in size quite considerably, therfore on a smaller camper one of these covers would be gathered, possibly leaving far too many tucks and folds where water could sit un-noticed causing damage firstly to the cover and leading to ingress onto the trailer underneath. In my opinion every winter cover should be tailor made to fit the unit it is covering, allowing any rain water to drain freely.
It is good to know that you have seen one of my covers in action! I wonder if the gent that you got the storage cover off was Steve McVicar, if so he has had some health problems recently and is unfortunately having to sell his Dandy. Really nice bloke, I made his transit cover for him when he was holidaying in Jersey with the Dandy.

Good evening all, I trust that you have got the summer well and truly out of your systems! As promised I have been working on sourcing a high quality long lasting material for making up winter covers which I have now found.

I have added some prices below for reference. Each cover is made to measure for the specific unit, providing a snug fit. I have gone for a 90cm depth on all four sides which I think will drop below the bottom perimeter of the trailers by about 5cm. Evenly spaced eyelets are placed along the bottom perimeter in a re-enforced hem with 6mm marine grade (long lasting) braided luff line fitted to gather the cover in at the bottom of the trailer.
The material is a high quality fully breathable marine fabric which is chemically treated against U.V degredation, rot & mildew. I am confident that cover made in this material will last a good number of years. Seperate storage box covers would also be available, I would really appreciate your thoughts and comments,

    many thanks

    Mick

    PRICES

    DART - £125
    DELTA - £165
    DESIGNER - £195
    DISCOVERY - £195
    DESTINY - £210

Looking at the price difference between the units I think the Destiny gets the best deal ........... Destiny's are a lot larger than any of the other units. If I had a Destiny I would buy one at that price.

It does looks a little odd, the Destiny cover not being much more expensive than the Designer/Discovery cover, but there is less wasted material when making up a cover for that particular model, due to the roll width of this material, so I am able to keep the price down a little. If anyone would like to let me know the measurements of their front boxes (I think the sizes do differ from unit to unit, let me know if I am wrong) I will work out some prices for those too.

    many thanks

I have a specialised cover which i bought 2nd hand for £40 the previous owner had barely used before renting a garage.I had been hunting around for a winter cover prior to finding that bargain.
I had a quote of £225 from Pro-Tec,£205 from Specialised and £175 for a custom cover by Trident out of marine grade breathable acrylic.
There are not many companies out there who make Winter covers, strange considering the UK's winter weather and the lack of garages available.
It's good to see UndercoverCI are going to be offering winter covers as i have seen one of their transit covers on Steve McViter's Dandy Designer and its a better fit than the original factory cover.

Hi all, hope you are enjoying the off season, just a quick post to say that I have just completed working on the design and pricing of some winter covers for the entire Dandy range using a very high quality & durable polly cotton canvas which is designed to last many seasons. It is fully treated against UV & fungisidal degradation and is also completely breathable, please see the link below to my Facebook post with a link to the relevant web page on my website.
Please let me know if you would like any further info, of course it goes without saying that there will be a 10% discount on my web prices for all the lovely members of this forum

    many thanks
