Phone confusion
I want to buy John a new mobile phone for our anniversary but as I don't personally like them choosing is difficult. There are I phones, Android phones, blackberry's and SIM free what is the difference and what do they all do. Help appreciated as I don't have a clue

Re: Phone confusion
mostly it depends on what John does with his phone, do you want to call, text, use the internet? look first at what you need and then you can narrow down the search
i use a phone and have done for years but still find choosing a new one a nightmare as there are so many about xx

Re: Phone confusion
Well he only really makes calls and texts but is rather impressed that Nick can point his at the stars and it will tell him the names and my brothers is also a sat nav. I think he wants one he can show off
I like the fact that Mike can create a wi-fi hotspot and tether, of course it would be me using the facility when we are away.
I dread him having a new phone because every time he ends up getting ratty at it and thinking it's broken simply because he hasn't got a clue how to use it, the kids have to come around and show him

Re: Phone confusion
Iphones are supposed to be the ones but i dont like how you are tied into apple, blackberry are nice phones but they are having financial trouble at the moment and a lot of there benefit is business systems supplied by them,so that leaves my choice at an android phone with loads of manufactures to choose from all using the android system and market for apps, there are thousands of apps to choose from and one hell of a lot are free.Mine is the htc wildfire s another realy nice one especially to use on the internet is the Samsung galaxy s 2,both these and a few others will create a wi-fi hot spot but its important you get on a network that allows tethering,i know 3 do on certain deals and some others may,and yes they do know if you do it.
I wanted the Samsung galaxy 2 but it was £10 a month dearer and the only advantage it had was a larger scree for surfing so as i intended to tether to my laptop and now tablet mainly i didn't need the larger screen.

I-Phone all the way for me. Easy to use & they've just got a new one out with the Siri voice control system which is apparently the 'mutts nuts'

Re: Phone confusion
What I've seen of I-phones, I've nothing against them, our Android phone do mostly the same things for a fraction of the cost. OH, Wayne, has a HTC wildfire, he is very pleased with that.
There are lots of reviews on the various phones on line, I think it's always worth reading a good few to get a good overview.
A SIM only deal is where you have the price plan and no phone, you have to buy the phone separately, or use a current one.
Wayne bought his phone as a PAYG (pay as you go) phone on special offer and a SIM only contract, it worked out cheaper compared to a two year contract with phone. The down side is the bigger initial outlay, and less warranty, but may be worth looking into.

Re: Phone confusion
Android smartphones are very good I agree particularly the HTC ones I've seen. But since a friend of my picked up a nasty virus from an app he bought I don't think I'd trust the Android Market.

Re: Phone confusion
The problem i see with the Iphone is you are committed to apple and with all large company's one your committed that's it,i run AVG anti virus on mine its free, but according to the forums there are no viruses within the android market yet,it will happen but its like using a pc you can avoid getting a virus by paying apple prices and getting a mac, there are two ways they protect you one is the way there applications dont link with each other so there is nowhere for a virus to go,the other is by maintaining control of what you can do with some thing you have bought and paid for,its the second bit i dont like.

Re: Phone confusion
I am looking forward to using it but must admit I need something easy to use as I do get a bit stressed learning to use a new one and apparently this one is supposed to be easy.

Re: Phone confusion
Don't tell me he is going to be throwing it at the wall within an hour of playing with it. If I get him a new phone I have learnt not to give it to him on anniversaries or Christmas day, this way he can learn how to use it before and we can relax and enjoy the moment rather than have him frustrated. Think I may give it to him now and maybe by our anniversary in 4 weeks he will have the hang of it

There are two views you can get phone or classic to be able to log on and post i think you will need classic, things are very small on that but you can go into the menu when the page is loaded and select column view.
if he cant sort it i will go on with our blackberry and ring John while ime doing it.

I used to stay on the classic but on mine if you pressed the blackberry button and chose column view every thing was larger.

Re: Phone confusion
Hmn well it didn't work out too well with the blackberry and John had two in the space of a couple of weeks both had faults
He now has an android phone, it's a Samsung and seems to be okay and far easier to use too
