Cleaning our Dandy again. Empty Cleaning our Dandy again.

Post by Helen on Tue 15 May 2012, 4:27 pm

We're going to give the Dandy a good clean up on Sunday, cif's on offer at the moment in Morrisons. We don't erect the Dandy to clean the roof because we find it easier to clean sections by unfolding it kind of like turning the pages of a book while it's sat on top of the folded Dandy ....... the walls are always much cleaner as we clean them more often because they're easy to reach on site. Very Happy

the awning is the biggest job but we try keep on top of stuff as best we can so it never gets to the eaten in grime stage that it was when we first got it. Evil or Very Mad

Yes Mr Sheen helps and it also helps the roof slide and makes it smell lovely too. The awning and walls aren't bad but the outside of the roof could do with cleaning as we don't do it as often as everywhere else because we can't reach when it's set up and conveniently forget to do it at home until we arrive on site and say 'oh dear look at the roof we must clean it when we get home' but only if we have an audience lol! if not we ignore it as it's that not noticeable when set up and just give it a good clean around spring time ....... we're running late

We still have nightmares about the state the awning was in when we first got it affraid

I put the awning roof on the top of the dandy trailer as it keeps it off the ground and easier to get around bounce

Wayne did all of Milo, except the out side of the roof last week so it was already for a steam rally we had booked, we then found out it had been cancelled do to flooding. Mad

Hes also found a top tip for making our dry wood sides look shiny and newish, as they are basically a plastic coated ply which begins with P, come brain - engage, Cleaning our Dandy again. 143088812 he wondered if car tyre gel cleaner would work on them, and it worked a treat, the wood is now very smooth and strokeable Cleaning our Dandy again. 2829330259 We had some Meguiars tyre gel in the shed, we now need another bottle to finish the back. Will be giving the beast (perhaps I should think of a more appropriate name!!) a good clean next time we are away....I guess by what you are saying Cif is best?

Someone else recommended PVC cleaner but we worry it would be too abrasive on it....although the white part of the awning has 4 lovely rust coloured stains from the previous owner who stored the spare wheel on it (doh!!) perhaps PVC cleaner is the only answer for that Question

We've tried them all, cif doe's the job without degrading the pvc. Unfortunatly the rust and tyre marks are another story and I've not found anything that removes them Sad

I tried this, thinking what the hell nobody else seems to have tried it, let's have a go. The results were fantastic! No eating away of the surface, no abrasion, just disolved dirt, it's great. I will certainly use it again!!! Smile

I've used a solvent cleaner too ....... only the once though, I wasn't aware at the time that some can take away a very fine layer. I did test it once I was made aware but had already cleaned mine and then found that when I rubbed with a cloth and then looked at the cloth there was evidence to suggest that the solvent I used wasn't suitable, it was for pvc but hard pvc like windows and doors and it works by desolving a microscopic layer. I personally wouldn't recommend it, undercovermick who makes pvc trailer covers also warned against solvent use because they can (with continued use I imagine) degrade the pvc and make it a lot less supple. It is used to clean up dandy's ready for sale but I would be wary about using it often. It's a quick fix and really tempting but we've had our Dandy 10 years now and plan to keep it as long as possible so worry about using anything that may cause any problems in the future so we go for the safest option now.

I did use Silky caravan cleaner and it's as good if not better than cif but it's more expensive ....... I would use it again though if my Dandy ever got really mucky but we do keep on top of it to avoid the ingrained effect.

We must be careful with the word solvent as we have all used a solvent on our dandys, water is a solvent things dissolve in it so its just a case of being sure no long term damage is done by cleaning with some form of chemical cleaner,i have no doubt there is a cleaner out there that is safe to use its just with my history in paints, cleaners, and solvents i prefer to stick with a strength of cleaner that ime happy with.
