Post by mike on Tue 12 Jun 2012, 2:25 pm

Not a meet as such but a discussion thread, with the uncertainty of the weather at Christmas time ime not going to put a Christmas meet idea forward,we will be going away over Christmas and new year and as soon as we decide where it will be on this thread with an open invitation to other members to join us.
If you are of the same mind and would like to post your plans with an invitation to other members please use this thread,we had a great time last Christmas with it being our first Christmas day dinner in a dandy.

Right it's getting close to Christmas and plans need to start to be formulated.
As Lucie had proposed Ravenglass I had a look at The Camping And Caravanning Club's website.
Learnt precisely nothing as unless I'd been incapable to use the system it appears that it only reveals prices once you are in the process of booking. I couldn't book as upon entering both trailer tent and caravan the site told me that there were no suitable pitches.
Not quite believing everything was booked up I phoned.

Prices: Alas I have the memory of a goldfish so these prices are as I remember them but are not guaranteed to be accurate.
High season £9.75 per person Low season (something like 3 of the nights between the 20th Dec and 3rd Jan £7 something.
£3.75 per night EHU.
This being for C&CC members, non members £7.10 per night supplement. C&CC membership £40.00
Those of you over 55 receive a 30% reduction on the low season nights.

Availability: There are a reasonable number of spaces, traditionally New Year fills up but Christmas may not. So as some may choose to camp over the new year if you fancy camping here we need to get our fingers out.

My thoughts: It's not exactly cheap camping, if I was looking at 10 nights it would cost me in the region of £175.00 or 5 nights £107.50. Some will say that the amount also covers my membership of the C&CC for 12 months but I've survived so far without joining. It is an attractive looking site though. For me though the main attraction of camping is being away and meeting people I don't need the most twee of sites. If we get some degree of interest I'm not against this place but I know not how many of you are interested?

So whatever we do we need to be doing something soon.

So who is up for a Christmas Camp be it here or elsewhere?

I know Mike was expressing an interest in camping but this was a bit far (At that time of year or anytime Mike?)

The above site served some of my preferences as it's more likely to be cold and possibly snow than at our choice for last Christmas.

I'm not normally limited geographically but I've got a mate who wants to camp this Christmas (Tin Tent) and he would prefer within 2Hr of Manchester but I can probably push him to Ravenglass. Though it's only £2.00 per night I was not tempted by his idea to camp at The Tan Hill Inn.

A unified camp would always be nice but if we end up with camps at different locations then that is good too. So who wants to come out and play this Christmas?

We would be interested, but we would quite like a dark site and clear skies. If we camp with you and your Christmas camping gear, we won't get either. affraid lol!

Aw I was even going to have a bath before Christmas just to be sociable.
Well whether I attend or not the Ravenglass site isn't for you as it has lighting at night.
Though falling snow would be an 8 okta or even possibly a 9 okta sky, what happens on a clear night after snow? Does light pollution from miles away ruin the sky as it reflects upwards off a white surface?

So are you promoting an alternative camp or is there a sky watching gathering you're attending?

Lol to your bath. No idea on the sky front after snow, i'm new to it all. :-/

We've not made any plans for Christmas, I don't think there's anything astro related happening because many partners aren't into it, and Christmas is meant to be a family time. :-S

We're easy, but not 100% decided, it's depends on the dog, funds and weather. If clear, we'll look for Santa, if not, there's not much point to go looking so we can go somewhere light. ;-)

Hi Mike, that's the one. We were going to go there after Woodhallspa, but we took the classic set up instead. We stayed at their previous place, they're really nice people. :-)

Not wanting to twist your arm but does this mean that you will be making your mind up at some point after the 20th Dec?

While many are ruminating about winter camping hardened winter campers are thinner on the ground. Yeah like we can call ourselves hardened after last Christmas, better weather than most of this summer.

Quite possibly, and you're right, it was colder at Woodhallspa than it was at Christmas last year. :-)

Been avoiding this thread lately as its not looking good for us this christmas as far as camping is concerned,we haven't ruled it out or in Very Happy Kevin with his normal perceptiveness is right there would be a limit to our travel distance, nothing to do with the time of year just the way we camp now.If we do camp it will most likley be a last moment decision to a site within 50 miles or so,part of the decision will be weather related if it looks like being cold bright and nice (the ideal camping weather)we probably wont go as that would be the best weather for one of my projects at home.
For the last couple of years all my energy has been directed towards camping and then this forum, the forum looks to have a good base now,the camping is always available so long as i have a dandy so i am directing a lot of my time now towards my rekindled interest in natural history photography, with the 3D aspect being a steep learning curve at my age.
Hope a few of the members do get together at christmas as we had a great time last year,as was said the weather was good but you really need snow lol!
