Re: Alphabetical artists game
Too many choices. This wasn't the artist I was going to feature I was going to feature another artist then I got seduced to a song with a cracking piece of prose at the end then this option appeared.
Alexis Korner from performing the Stones to being in the Stones.
Which didn't lead to Etta James as you might expect but and the somewhat forgotten vocals of Christine Perfect.
Now the thing I can't reconcile is I can't find Hall & Oates doing I Would Rather Go Blind but I have got a mental image of I think John Oates singing "I Was Just, I Was Just" Anyone any idea what song the same line is used in?

meangran, bedwok ????
Brilliant choice Vandriver, how did none of us think of that before?
Loved the Alexis Korner too Tow Itch, but stumped on the Hall & Oates question.
For 'N' I offer the bright lights of Neon Neon featuring the Welsh legends Gruff Rhys and, on this particular track, Cate le Bon -

No don't really get on the GM forums tho we did register to try and get a live in ticket as we didn't have our Dandy at the time we got the tickets. Just managed to get one today at face value off gumtree woohoo. Not sure if we can get there on Thursday this year but will be trying !!

Re: Alphabetical artists game
I've never seen another Dandy at Green Man so I'll be on the lookout for yours. Our Designer served us very well there for the last five years, hopefully the Destiny will see as least as many. It's a new 'live-in' vehicle area this year so not sure what to expect. Hopefully it will be easier to get out of if the weather turns bad. It was late afternoon on the Monday by the time we managed to get out last year. Do try to get there on Thursday if you can, there's some fantastic music from the very new Money to the rather older Patti Smith.
Now, as no one else has posted a song, I have the option of being accused of taking the thread off topic or of being greedy so I'll go for the latter -
'O' is a difficult one but there's an easy option in a band, but not a song, that has featured before. I think this is the one of the greatest songs ever written but whilst I could wax lyrically about other songs I'd put in that category, in this case if I were asked to justify my view I don't think I could say any more than "it just is"

Re: Alphabetical artists game
I decided to bring a bit of culture to your lives.
P is for Portsmouth Sinfonia.
I bet you can't get to the end with out feeling emotional .... just when you think it can't get any better.... it does. Makes me weep every time I hear it.

No, no, no, no, no. No more Queen tracks, well this time at least.
Anyone remember Kenny Everett using this as backing music then it being a big hit.
There is a video of them "playing" on TOTP. The problem is it's introduced by the bum (didn't write bum) who does the same show on Radio 2 that he did on Radio 1 and just like in both of those the twit (didn't write twit either) talks over the record.

Re: Alphabetical artists game
I had the great pleasure to meet bedwok and his partner at the weekend (by amazing coincidence we ended up pitched beside each other).
In my seven years of the Green Man, this was the best one yet. Amongst the numerous highlights was Roy Harper. He arrived on stage in Grumpy Old Git persona wondering what he was doing there but it didn't take long for the magical spirit of the place to infuse him as it does so many artists.

Re: Alphabetical artists game
As stated earlier this was actually what some current band are sampling. Any idea who or what?
The Stone Roses and Fools Gold
I couldn't give a chuff actually. Too old either physically, mentally or both to do madchester.

Re: Alphabetical artists game
I forgot to thank vandriver for the Portsmouth Sinfonia contribution. I have to say that despite my best attempts I could not maintain a dry eye on listening - an absolute classic
I have heard the Fool's Gold sample in something recently but can't remember what it was at the moment. I seem to recall that the Roses were accused of stealing some sample on this song when it was originally released, not that I have much interest in such things. The best 'new' music takes it's influence from what has gone before and combines those various influences in new and innovative ways.
Anyhow, as I've got 'T' I'm going for the popular vote (as if such thing existed on this thread ) with an old classic. We've certainly had the man and possibly the band before, but not this track. There are hundreds of versions around - this is an early one, and I like it ...

Re: Alphabetical artists game
Not a dry eye in the house. Not as slick as the Live And Dangerous version with the constant questions on how live and how studio that album was. If Tony Visconti did such a wonderful job of mixing in studio work why do all the Thin Lizzy studio albums seem so dead?
If you were ever taken by a portion of regret at a parting Phil cuts to the quick with his lyrics.
A band overburdened with star quality that could have done so much better than what it released

Re: Alphabetical artists game
Back from holidays in Spain and hoping this thread will provide some much needed musical sustenance as we move into the autumnal months ahead.
Yes, U.K. do demonstrate that the whole can sometimes be rather less than the sum of the parts.
We always struggle towards the end of the alphabet - maybe we should have some form of amnesty if anyone wants to skip a few letters?
Anyway here's what I think is a fairly decent 'V' (could cover 'W' too if anyone has an exciting 'X' to post )
I actually prefer the studio version but there's no video for it.

Re: Alphabetical artists game
pretty dam good ... I'll go with that
Another very acceptable face of "country" and his progeny have certainly produced some fantastic music too.
Now the dreaded 'X'. Well there is one fairly obvious choice that I think we've missed ...
And another beautiful person that should still be with us, but isn't ...

Re: Alphabetical artists game
Nice to see an old favourite spring back to life; I love Paul Young's early stuff.
I thought I was going to have to unearth something fairly obscure for 'Z' but then I remembered a fairly obvious one that I don't believe we've had previously.
Looking forward to another run through the alphabet

Re: Alphabetical artists game
Bugger you did Z. I'm thankful you have joined back in but I had this desperate Z where I was going to punish you all if you didn't join in again. Strangely it was me who was wrong though. Next time round I have a Z to blow your minds.
Back to A. I don't know how many regions this Granada series was shown in. The opposite of the Monkees a band that had hits that then got a TV series but at this point they disappeared as a chart act.
Remember that? Never mind you will remember the cover of this:
Copying Mick Jagger or preempting Steve Tyler? Flash stage suits!
