Feeling all nostalgic
I've just had some sweets that I've not had for a long long time and it made me think of all the other stuff that used to be in most sweet shops. The ones I had today were Parma Violets and I sucked them until a little hole appeared in the middle

Re: Feeling all nostalgic
I know what you mean. I like aniseed balls and whatever is the bit in the middle. I found some of these at a garage last year but haven't found any since I have made the same packet last by only having one every week coming home from work, can you have withdrawal symptoms from aniseed?

Re: Feeling all nostalgic
I'm not a big sweet fan but a friend has a weakness for sweets especially coltsfoot rock the producer of that is Stockley's of Blackburn.
I'm wondering is sweet production a northern thing or is it the varieties I know come from the north?
I know Lion Sweets of Cleckheaton best of all

But living were I do and under the lustful gaze of lessor pie eating folk (if 5% of people understand this sentence I'd be amazed) I'd still have to admit to the existence of this place. (Google Pie Eaters)

William Santus & Co seem to have just stuck all their products under the Uncle Joe's Label but they make many other products.
Lofthouse of Fleetwood and the Fisherman's Friends.
Though alas Victory V are no longer made in Nelson but Devon then again they have removed the chloroform and either from the mix.
Barnips and Imps? Bound to be a Northern thing for the permanently wet and smog suffering to get over chest problems.
Useful web sites.

If any of you ever join us in sunny Dent there is a cracking traditional sweet shop in Sedbergh.
I am waiting for some wanton pervert to tell of there teenage abuse of the confectionery called space dust: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Re: Feeling all nostalgic
Aniseed balls were lovely Essie, for some reason my nan used to say that if you keep them in your pockets stray dogs will follow you home!
Sarsparilla twists were another that I don't see anymore and we used to have pineapple cubes as well as the cola cubes Phoenix mentioned.

Re: Feeling all nostalgic
Thank you, yes an order is on its way. I can maybe do two a day for a while. I'm a bit disappointed that no one suggested Pernod as an alternative to aniseed. Mind you I haven't had that for about twenty odd years.
Most of the sweets I don't recognise by their names, but what is coltsfoot rock?
I do remember the bubble gum though.
We used to have Blackjack bars, which I think were toffee and liquorice, and black teeth and tongue.

Coltsfoot Rock Sticks - hard sticks of brittle rock flavoured with Coltsfoot (a plant with hoof shaped leaves) People used to dry and smoke the leaves to relieve asthma and the juice was used as a cough cure. The taste is strangely addictive!

Re: Feeling all nostalgic
The aniseed balls have arrived. A big bag and a free lollipop too. Now I can have one on the way to work and back. Our bubble gums were shaped like golfballs and hard so we used to break them into little pieces to make them last or to share them. We were horrible children

I remember the Golf balls too and the giant gob stoppers that wouldn't fit in your mouth they lasted about a week and I used to lick them until they showed another colour underneath then put them back in the wrapping until I wanted some more.

Looking forward to the long hot summer. Does anyone remember Jubbly?
I can only find one photo on the web.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
It says drink on the side but I remember them frozen.
The pack is a tetrahedron and was the first product of the worlds biggest food packaging company Tetra Pak.
