What self inflating mats do you recommend John?

Re: Stops under bed condensation
Sounds good, but as you said it's expensive just to try, ok self inflating mats good for condensation what else works because that's one problem I've never really solved. I've tried silvered camping mats but they don't seem to have made much difference.

Re: Stops under bed condensation
I use a self inflating air bed on top of the mattress, cant remember if its 5 or 7cm but it stops your body heat penetrating the mattress so the bed board never gets warm so no condensation

Re: Stops under bed condensation
from the looks of the picture using an off cut of breathable ground sheet would be just as successful, but i dont think it would work at all. i use a loft insulation comprising of bubble wrap encased in 2 layers of foil, still not cheap but works very well.

Double or single mats? I would think double would be too big, but single would be too small?

Re: Stops under bed condensation
Found some good reviews for this stuff so I'm tempted to give it a try as it would actually cost us more to buy some decent self inflating mats. If I do try it out I'll let everyone here know how we get on!

Re: Stops under bed condensation
It looks to me like it should work although it appears very expensive for what it is.
I've seen something similar used in rail vehicle floor design to keep the thermal insulation in the floor raised of the metal bedplate in order to ensure that any water in there can flow across the bedplate to the drains rather than be held in the insulation and cause corrosion.
Underbed condensation is a real problem on our Riva Destiny as the bed boards are covered in an impervious plastic material which provides no ability to 'breathe'.
I was planning to try the foil insulation recommended by alday as I believe I have some spare in the loft.

Jayne
Just a thought does the erection of the side skirt cut the level of under bed condensation as it allows the wood to warm slightly?
Has anyone used external insulation. i.e. The underside of the bed ply?

What about corrugated cardboard boxes? Free regular supply from supermarkets when they are worn out.

We have a friend who's a carpet fitter and he's given us some of this to try for nothing (it was an off cut they had left over), So we're going to try it out this weekend, I'll let you know how we get on, if this doesn't work, I'm tempted to try that mesh stuff.

Re: Stops under bed condensation
We tried the loft insulation (foil / bubble wrap sandwich) on our last trip and, while it reduced the amount of condensation, it didn't eliminate it.
Next step is to insulate the underside of the bed boards with the same material and see if that makes a further improvement.

Re: Stops under bed condensation
If i was looking at underbed (on the outside) I'd consider one of the Kingspan solid Polystyrene/foil products.

That probably would be better alright - It would certainly be easier to fix in place. The only downside is I have to buy it, whereas I have a roll of the other one available

We use the *good parts" of an old carpet as recommended by a dear friend who was a Dandy camper.
Works fine.

Re: Stops under bed condensation
The polypropylene underlay worked very well, the underneath of the beds were cold to the touch but completely dry definitely intend to carry on using it.

Re: Stops under bed condensation
Is it a true test at this time of year. Surely there can't be much condensation with the weather we had over the bank holiday.
