We decided that there wasn't enough work surface or a place to put things like a small tv, table lamp or just extra worktop for putting the electric kettle on so we made a removable shelf. The end of the sofa seemed wasted as the units are in the way so we first reinforced the side of the top cupboard, we just used something that was left over from another job and fitted it inside remembering to add the handling slot. You can see in the pictures how we did the rest, it fits flush and is very sturdy. We just take it off and leave it in the Dandy on the floor when we pack away. The best thing was that the shelf was made from a piece that we found in the Ikea clearance area and only cost £4.00

Picture of the inside of the cupboard as requested by Eilis, there are four bolts holding the piece inside that reinforces the side of the cupboard to take the weight of the shelf and stuff I put on it, I just couldn't get far enough in the cupboard to get a picture of all 4 bolts lol! you can see how the extra bit is cut out where you have hand holes. Just make sure you fit it flush with the framework otherwise your cupboard door won't close.
