Camping without EHU Empty Camping without EHU

Post by mike on Sun 28 Aug 2011, 6:20 am

With the cost of electric rising it looks like the cost for EHU will rise next year,do you camp without it or would you look at doing if the prices continue to rise.
If you do what things can help people trying it for the first time, must admit although i always use it i am set up for not having it,three way fridge, under floor heater and magnetic led lights which will last a week, although extreme caution should be used i even like sitting in candle light at night.
If any one has experience of solar charging then some facts on that rather than the claims made by the retailers would be good.

Camping without EHU Empty Re: Camping without EHU

Post by Helen on Sun 28 Aug 2011, 4:56 pm

We always camped without it until we met you lot lol! then we got soft

In truth we don't often use EHU and have found we can still have all of the comforts, we run a small tv off the leisure battery and have the underfloor heater to keep us warm. I do love our gas lamps and use one even when we are using EHU and I love to hear the kettle whistle Very Happy The fridge works very well from a small dumpy gas bottle so although being able to just plug in is convenient it isn't something that we really need and I certainly wouldn't be put off a site that didn't have Hook up. We rarely use EHU, we run everything on gas or the leisure battery.

As a lot of people refuse to use sites that don't offer electric, some of those sites feel pressured to install it to keep customers coming, this is well and good, except it pushes the standard price up for those they don't want it. Camping without EHU 9639063

Of course the sites have the initial outlay of installing EHU, then there is the cost of the safety checks. Camping without EHU 9639063 again.

Camping without EHU Empty We have been on da meets or club rallies without EHU

Post by HIDEHI on Sun 29 Jul 2012, 2:36 pm

We used the da meets and ralies for yrs now, both with dandies and caravans.
95% of our camping was without EHU, we used gas in the caravans to run fridge and cooker, and a suitcase solar panel charger 13w that kept the leasure bat toped up for a week to 10 days, without tv that was.
Found that to run a tv we needed a larger solar panel of min 40w, but 60 w is preferable.
unless we ran the tv jest for soaps lol then 3 days = low batery.

Out of interest what size of gas cilinders do you guys use, and are they calor gas or camping gas, i ask cos we seemed to run out of camping gas in small cil, when we had the dandies before, and the color lite 7 kg we used in caravan ran for ever lol.
Ideas please welcomed.
Also we have a jml vecpack machine that we use to pack bacon sausager and other food, it keeps longer even without a fridge.
So well be useing that more now when HIDEHI dandy comes home to us. cheers

I use a 4.5kg butane bottle and it lasts for a while, it would see us through a fortnights holiday and longer. Propane is better for winter camping though.

We use a 13kg butane, only because it works out cheaper per kg in the bigger bottle, and of course we have a van to carry it in.

In the winter, we now also use the Dandy, but with electric instead of camper van and Propex heater, so we don't use gas on the Dandy in winter, but agreed if we were, propane is better for winter camping.

In the classic set up we use those tiny gas cartridges, this is because we have no where to transport a gas bottle with the classic, we've got our dining arrangements in the classic setup so we only use one or two cartridges over a weekend. I also bought a job lot that worked out at £1 each.

The classic set up doesn't go to car shows in the winter, because we haven't found any yet. affraid

Camping without EHU Empty Re: Camping without EHU

Post by Helen on Mon 30 Jul 2012, 5:20 pm

Your welcome, we like to camp without EHU and we take our gas lanterns with us (they take small canisters) ...... there's something about the sound of them and they do warm things up lovely ready for when we get into bed. I wouldn't recommend them with children though as they get very very hot, we stand ours on a wooden chopping board on top of the cooker on a low setting when inside the Dandy but in the awning it sits on a table and we turn it up. Very Happy

It's so lovely to go back to basics and sit anywhere in a field without having to be next to a fence with a box to plug into.
