Post by Cazz on Fri 07 Oct 2011, 1:31 pm

I'm looking for very, very, very cheap ideas for making 60's Christmas decorations please.

So far on the list:-
Pop corn on strings.
Paper chains.
Foil hanging things.

As a kid i had father Christmas in a sleigh pulled by a couple of reindeer, the best bit of the decorating was i was allowed to make a frozen lake scene on a laid down mirror with cotton wool and glitter with a snowman and small fir tree cuttings, sad but i looked forward to it

Excellent things, I don't have the advantage of remembering 60's things. lol! santa

I do remember making a cardboard star and covering it in tin foil.

I also remember collecting pine cones and evergreens to make a table centre with a candle in the middle.

Of course the glitter, that ended up still being around at Easter. affraid

I think it may be later than the 60's but my mum used to make salt dough decorations with us and we would decorate them and we also used to 'blow eggs' that was make a small hole in the bottom and one in the top then blow through the top hole and the egg would come out at the bottom. We had a lot of scrambled eggs lol!

When we were left with just the egg shell my mum would clean them with soapy water (very carefully) and then we could decorate them, usually with her nail varnishes Laughing glue with glitter or little sticky stars, we glued a bit of ribbon to the top to hang them.

They wouldn't travel very well unless you put them in one of those plastic egg carriers.

Aaahhhhhh memories. Very Happy

I remember decorating blown eggs at Easter time, hadn't thought about at Christmas.

They could also be transported in an egg box inside a plastic box.

We also did them for Easter but they look just like baubles if you put sparkles and stuff on them. Ours were a bit of a messy affair but hey we were kids and it was fun cheers

I can remember paper chains, where you bought short strips of paper with gummed edges.
I also remember folding 2 colours of crepe paper about 2 or 3 inches wide. The paper would be constantly folded back over each other and stuck together at each end. Can't remember if the crepe paper was cut down from large sheets or how long it was and what we did to extend the length?

That's brought back memories too Kevin, you used to end up with a boxed type crepe paper chain. It was strips and you just used some sellotape to make them longer:D

I think I follow, I remember making decorations at brownies using crepe paper.

We could put candles on a tree branch instead of lights on a tree.

Are we going to make a fire risk Dandy with all this paper and naked flames. affraid

The pancake ended up as a messy lump in the pan during the cooking demonstration, live on air.

I remember the spirals, I also remember making at school something that was made from pulling a wire coat hanger into a circleish shape and tying strips of carrier bag to it and spraying it silver or gold, a bow was added to the top. I remember they always looked impressive.
