Is christmas losing its way Empty Is christmas losing its way

Post by mike on Tue 29 Nov 2011, 6:59 am

Or has it lost it,i get accused of a bah humbug attitude but then i admit to most of my Christmas being directed at nancys grandchildren,i wish people merry Christmas and mean it, we send cards and mean the good cheer they say,and we put a tree up,after that i try to ignore most of the commercialisation that is every where around us.
In my opinion it has lost its way but its up to us how far down that road we go.

I agree with you, christmas should be about spending time with the family, with presents for the children, but nowadays its about spending silly amounts of money on toys and games which the children do not seem to appreciate like we used to years ago. I enjoy my christmas dinner with the family, then the peace and quiet once they have gone home.
As we have a kitten this year who is a terror, we are not putting a tree up as i dont think i could cope with the stress of her pulling it about,

For us it has always been about family, I have many fond childhood memories of all the family including grandma's and grandad even a few stray neighbours sitting at the table (we were allowed a snowball to drink on Christmas day) it was great with us all sat in silly hats. Since I have had my own home Christmas day moved to our house and we continued the tradition of inviting any neighbours who didn't have family, at times I have had 16 adults and 4 children sitting down to dinner and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Last year was the first time we went out for Christmas dinner, to my daughters and I inevitably ended up doing the cooking Laughing

This year has been a sad one for us and my family have been fantastic, my big sister is hosting Christmas Dinner this year but they all fully understand that we would like to get away. Christmas has become commercialised but it has been for as long as I can remember, I suppose it's what you make it and for us it's about family and good friends, perhaps making someone happy who has no family to speak of by bringing them into ours. Some things are far more valuable than any gift and can lead to the most unlikely friendships.

We will still be celebrating Christmas and refuse to be miserable but this year it will be away from here sat in a field somewhere with the Dandy and a few friends Very Happy

Wish we were able to come too now Helen, but booked up with the cooking etc for the big day, but perhaps next year we might get away.
Hope you all enjoy the meeting, I will be thinking of you all and waiting for the pics to follow.

The thing is Bev in a Dandy you can't possibly cater for all so you only have to do a bit of the cooking cheers
