Did you have measles as a child ? whenever anything was going around school you could guarantee one of us would bring it home and inevitably all 3 of us ended up having chicken pocks and also measles, they were common childhood ailments at that time .... both unpleasant and I can still remember itching my chicken pocks and being covered in pink calamine lotion. I had both my kids vaccinated for measles but that was before the controversial MMR vaccine came out. It looks as though my niece has measles, she's 17 and wasn't vaccinated

Re: Did you have Measles ?
I had measles at 18 months or so I'm told cant actually remember. Apparently my mum kept me in a darkened room for 2 weeks as measles had damaged her eyesight as a child.

My mum put us on the sofa with a blanket wrapped around us ... she thought the warmth would bring the spots out faster so they'd go away sooner

Re: Did you have Measles ?
Yep, measles, german measles, mumps, chicken pox, whooping cough. Great fun. There were no vaccinations in my day and all the kids got the lot. Didn't do any of us any harm. I did feel hard done by though because my brother only got a very mild dose and I got each one really badly. Spent the entire school summer hoilday in bed with german measles and took the 11 plus with mumps.
Must admit we didn't get some of our kids vaccinated due to the scares. You think if you don't and everyone else does you won't get it. But they all thought the same, hence the epidemic now.

Mumps ...... I avoided for a long time and ended up with them as an adult, whenever the neighbours kids had something my mum used to let us play with them so we'd get it over and done with We just never got the mumps, my kids had them and I did too ..... when your a child it doesn't seem to matter so much that you look like a hamster .......... it does when your a grown up

Re: Did you have Measles ?
Mumps can make men sterile if they get it (or is it them) as an adult. My other brother did but he still has a son, though much better looking than his dad. Err... humm... Naw, couldn't be.
My wife got german measles when pregnant and lost the baby later. She really didn't have any symptoms but was rubella neg before and rubella pos after so must have had it. We always wonder if the baby was damaged by it and rejected at 13 weeks by mother nature.
In truth, these diseases can be pretty bad but somehow they didn't seem to be when we were kids. Maybe most are worse for adults.

Re: Did you have Measles ?
That's terrible, not the handsome nephew ..... your wife having rubella
I think my mums reasoning for chucking us in with anyone who had anything we could catch and then be supposedly immune from was her way of making sure we had stuff as children rather than adults rather than being cruel like we thought she was being

Re: Did you have Measles ?
Both Mrs P and I luckily had measles, chicken pox etc when we were both young. My mum wasn't so lucky and got measles when she was carrying her first born which resulted in my eldest sister being born deaf.

I had my son injected and as he is home schooled just remembered to catch up on the booster before the epidemic

Re: Did you have Measles ?
A friend had chicken pox when she was in her twenties and was in a real mess with them, made her very poorly ...... your mum had the same idea as mine Caznumbers
I started the thread because I don't understand why my niece was admitted to one hospital then transferred to another where there are skin specialists and then isolated ..... we were just put on the sofa as kids and given paracetamol, yes she has a temp but nothing too serious.
