The Dandy may have gone, but I've not forgotten my friends on the forum!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] torch lanterns are the canine's plums. They aren't available in all Aldi stores. I had to go to a second before I could buy one. Fortunately both Rotherham branches are fairly close together.
They come with a set of 4 AA batteries and a thin nylon shoulder strap. The torch beam is very tight, so it should cast a good light over a long distance, although there is a wide cone of low level illumination surrounding it.
The switch has 5 positions
1) Low beam which is still too bright to look directly into
2) High beam which I guesstimate to be 25-30% brighter
3) Lantern setting for general illumination
4) Low beam flashing
5) All off
If I have a complaint it is that the shoulder strap is difficult to attach, so either leave it on or don't use it at all.
I'd give it 4.75 out of 5, with the strap accounting for the difference.
