Called in at the Renault garage to have a nosey,as i am not a diesel or four wheel drive fan the basic 2wd version would suit me well @ £8995 on the road, doubt i will do anything as i have retirement pencilled in for next christmas and only 17000 miles on a four year old punto, but its in my mind.

I had a Cossack Ural motorbike from new. When the eldest was born I got a sidecar, on the wrong side. Could take the side car off inabout 2 minutes so could use it solo or as a combo. Used to take the babe to Mother in Laws to baby sit, drop the side car off and go into town to work.

I really grew to love that old bike as it just kept going through everything, even in the snow. Had it for years.

Worst part were the carburettors which did wear quickly. I made up a pair of manifolds out of conduit bends and fitted twin SUs from the scrap yard. Halved the fuel consumption.

To be fair if you are specifically in the market for a 4x4 it's off road ability is probably good enough for most people most of the time......provided you don't own a couple of sheepdogs and live on a farm!

Navver thought the only manifold work people had done on Urals was to heat them up so they could run on TVO.

Though I do believe that there are recipes that call for wing of bat or tail of newt.

Nice to see you had a reliable Ural I always thought they were a mixed bag and had one mate show up half a day late for the thumper rally because his Ural or Dnieper (Dnepr) had a piston disintegrate.

I'll leave you with Lois Pryce and the irrepressible Austin Vince to wax lyrical about Urals.

Thanks for that, didn't realise it was a film star.

I was lucky that when I had mine you could still get 2 star petrol. When I had to put 3 star in once it just ran way too hot, spitting & spluttering. I dont think it would have lasted on that. They were designed for russian pool petrol I believe.

I think it was the Dneiper was a 2 wheel drive. The sidecar wheel drove as well, brilliant for towing the plough through the mud. Happy days.
