Re: Car M.P.G. towing trailer
We worked out that on our last tank of fuel we were getting 51.5 mpg.
210 miles of the 514.5 we did was towing Phoenix to Woodhall Spa.
2000 Vauxhall Astra envoy van 1.7tdi

We get around 37 towing the Dandy with a 2.4 petrol 51 plate Santa fe, towing the caravan we get around 25 - 30 if there is no wind at all and we are going downhill

Re: Car M.P.G. towing trailer
Our car does not have a computer so i'm not precise about our mpg but it's about 50. We have a citroen berlingo 1.9 diesel. It's got absolutely no poke at all but it tows the dandy very economically. In fact for one or two reasons we are selling both our cars and looking at getting a Navara or Warrior pickup. So if anyones got a pickup i would be interested in hearing about their mpg etc.

Re: Car M.P.G. towing trailer
I would too ....... Johns convinced our car needs more power ...... he said that when we had a 1.6 that towed the dandy with ease personally I think he just says that when he wants a new car. he wants something called a Barbarian from what I've actually heard when refusing to listen about it ...... it's a big pick up.

Our Astra envoy van up until a month ago had turned into a gutless wonder. A mechanic friend of ours when MOTing it commented to Mrs P about it. He suggested the Mass Air flow Meter could be at fault. We disconnected it and it was better. We have now fitted another and it is a different van.
Worth a try?
Ps Mr P would like a big pickup. Must be a man thing.

Re: Car M.P.G. towing trailer
Think a barbarian is a mitsubishi warrior variant. One of those would do nicely.
Phoenix, your astra has a turbo which is the one piece of engineering missing from my engine. My car is a 05 reg and has done 68000mls, its a great family car but it struggles to tow up hills, i have to drop it down two gears to maintain a decent pace and it becomes hard work after a while/ I would love to get on the motorway press the cruise control button and relax.

Re: Car M.P.G. towing trailer
You want a turbo and an intercooler, like what I got on my Mondeo. A while back the hose from the turbo to the intercooler split and I towed the caravan to Cornwall and back like that. It threw out huge clouds of smoke whenever the engine had to do a little bit of work and jerked back & forth up every little hill. Of course the computer was pumping the fuel in thinking there was lots of air to go with it. I think the split opened and closed causing the jerking.
I do apologise to any one who might have been following us.
I didn't tell Mrs N as I didn't want to worry her, but she did notice. I said I expect it's 'cos it doesn't get much of a run very often, it'll soon clear.

07 VW Touran 2.0 TDI DSG and a Dandy 4/5
07 VW Touran 2.0 TDI DSG and a Dandy 4/5
Herfordsdhire to Snowdonia and back on one tank with just enough left to get to work on Monday. 44MPG going there and 48MPG coming back. More time stuck in traffic on the Friday reduced the average. Same run without the Dandy would normally be 52MPG assuming a clear run.
Biggest problem towing is remembering it is there. It is narrower than the car, so I cannot see it in the wing mirrors and since the Touran is tall it is only just visible in the rear view.

Bet you don't have any problems towing up hill with that.
Is it a pick up or a van? When you can, we love pics here.

LPG Helps
Rover 75 2.5 V6 auto with 109k on the clock... I get about 28.8mpg with the Dandy behind. Bear in mind that Rover's official figures said I should only get 29mpg without a trailer and that's not too bad. Having an LPG conversion makes it more acceptable with fuel costs less than half that of petrol gives a cost-wise 59mpg
