Re: Grunts - Groans - Moans
Well we got a telephone report yesterday on the caravan ............ we did have our suspicions as it turned out when we got the documentation back that the people we bought if off only had the van 3 weeks, the camper-van they had just bought and we're waiting for the documents for (up graded from the van because kids had grown we were told) is for sale. Looks like dealing but selling as private sellers perhaps because you have some come back when it comes to business sellers and descriptions.
When we took it in on the Saturday morning one of the men had come in on his own time to open up for us to drop it off and when we pointed out the area of concern he showed us the failed window seal and had a quick look over the pit, we could have just had that repaired but wanted it checking out thoroughly and this is what they found
Our van had a few problems hidden by sealant, ply-wood and new carpets, the result is a bill for £950
It is at a reputable place just near where it's been living and the works will be guaranteed, the good news is that it's still worth more than what we paid plus the cost of repairs and I am also having it fully serviced too so that's £300 of the bill. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
It's having a rail taken off, re-sealing before we get problems as it had been botched, a new floor fitted and that failed window seal replacing so I don't think it's a bad price for what's being done. We are having the old carpet put back in - it is after all brand spanking new so no wonder it looked clean, all this will take two weeks so we will use the Dandy on our van pitch for now and Laura will have to stay home ......... for at least 13 more days
I just feel disappointed that we weren't more vigilant and made a rash last minute decision .... the first alarm bell rang when we we're collecting and I was told that the water pump fitted at the front when from childhood memories I thought it should fit to the opposite side ...... and it doe's. Other things also set alarm bells ringing and we ignored them because we we're there with cash in hand ready to tow away and were excited Still it could have been so much worse and we did consider and could have paid the £3500 they were asking and still had a repair bill, in two weeks everything will be sorted out and we can then enjoy at our leisure and the total cost including purchase, repairs and peace of mind will be £2998 so not too bad.
I think the moral is that if alarm bells ring even on the last minute ..... listen to them.
As for dealers masquerading as private sellers .... if you have an address then report to trading standards and the local tax office.

Re: Grunts - Groans - Moans
glad it didn't turn into a complete nightmare for you Helen but i am sad that someone is masquerading as a private seller just to make a buck and fool people
at least you know it's sound now and can enjoy it fully, here's hoping that we have good weather this summer for you to enjoy it

Oh yes Mike we are taking action but doing it legally, it will take time but we are not going to just sit back and do nothing. Gas pipe was dated 1996 and had cracked hence using a lot of gas the weekend we actually used it. Just pleased we put a fan heater in it for when Evie was there rather than use the gas John thinks we've been made fools of but we're only fools if we do nothing about this.

Re: Grunts - Groans - Moans
Buying a used caravan is a minefield, and there are a lot of dodgy sellers out there. The real problem is that most of us are honest and can't imagine anyone telling outright lies in order to sell something. We always imagine Arthur Daley dealers ripping us off (and they do) but at least there is some straightforward legal protection in the case of a proper dealer. Most modern caravans suffer from some kind of water ingress as soon as the warranty runs out As a rough estimate the awning rails and windows need re-sealing every 5 years or so This is why I have a dead Lunar by the side of the house, I didn't re-seal it
THAT'S WHY I BOUGHT A DANDY At least I can fix it, although I'm sure I paid far too much
Anyway go get 'em Helen and I hope you make them suffer

Re: Grunts - Groans - Moans
Thanks Jake,
turns out that although you have no comeback with ebay for trailer tents, vehicles or caravans the law says I have a case even against a private seller because the seller knew about the faults (fitted new carpet to hide one of them )but lied in the description (already contacted lady they bought it off - they knew about the faults) ....... I'm past caring about the cost (luckily in a position to pay without worrying) just angry about the safety issue and will do everything I can to stop them doing this again. Trading standards are already onto it ...... tax man informed too, there is some satisfaction in being a thorn in some ones side for as long as it takes ..... I'm now looking into if your allowed to trade from a council house as we can prove that they are trading
Anyway whilst I'm annoying them someone else is getting some peace

Sorry to hear about your caravan Helen, but thankfully it looks like it's going to turn out ok in the end for you, at least you'll know where you're at with it. But I agree, pursue it as far as you can, it's not fair some people keep getting away with it.
And I agree with your football thoughts, it's millionaires kicking a bag of wind around.

fully understand woman on a mission, cash burning pocket, ruling head, want and NEED over take logic .The worst thing is the feeling that you have been had and when you start pealing back the layers of lie's that the seller tells you why can they not just tell the truth I'm the same once I bought a camper-van £500 Bargain but after spending lots of money still never got her on the road but the up side got my Dandy and just seen a firm around the corner that if you have a van they will convert it to a camper to your spec start at £5000.00 brilliant food for thought

Dandy's come in all different states but don't think you could of paid too much as all the trips that you will take would be more so than a car/spit/van and to be honest once you have done all those loving touches to it in the future you wont loose money but gain

Helen,
This is the information given by Waverley Borough Council: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and this is the information given by South Derbyshire District Council: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I think you'll find this policy will change from one Local Authority to another so you'll have to check this out with the LA in question. Best of luck with this, I hope you get this sorted soon.

Re: Grunts - Groans - Moans
Thanks for the links Ben, I will look into the council in question.
I am on a mission now ...... not so much because it's cost money but more because the workshop said it was a potential death trap my family including my little pride and joy Evie were put at risk because of these people, it could have been sold to someone who didn't get it thoroughly checked over but just sorted the window seal out. Have already contacted lots of people including Trading Standards and the law enforcement people on flea-bay and the campervan has already been taken off, I'm going to continue for as long as it takes because even a private seller has to tell you of serious problems they know about and it turns out that they did know. I'm quite enjoying my investigating and I go green when I'm angry
My lovely and safe van will be ready to collect a week on Friday ....... best get me a dongle because I now want my monies worth and will be residing in Wales as much as possible
anyway enough about Caravans ...... this is a forum for Dandy's ..... I've had my moan and will let you know the eventual outcome.
I suggest anyone even considering getting a caravan should go out and buy themselves a lovely uncomplicated Dandy
But not mine I'm keeping it for ever and ever

Helen....as you say you are lucky you are able to pay for the repairs - but most people would have maxed themselves out on buying the damn thing. People make me sick how they think about the money rather than peoples safety, this is a human life we are talking about, not something that can be bought back! Even if you cannot do that much to them, I hope you give them food for thought going forwards. God forbid anything should have happened to any of you.

The bank has supposedly sorted the problem out now ....... it's us customers who are still dealing with the aftermath of unpaid direct debits and standing orders. I know we won't be out of pocket but it's so damned inconvenient

Getting more and more worried about our banking system and seriously considering getting a safe instead!
